The central theme is the birth and growth of the life of divine grace in the soul. Thus a series of instructions treat of Original Sin, the Redemption, Grace, Theological Virtues, Gifts of the Holy Ghost, while another describes in detail the delicate mechanism of the development of this divine life according to the traditional doctrine of the Three Ways (purgative, illuminative and unitive). The different means of sustaining and increasing this life of grace are also discussed: Confession, Assistance at Mass, Holy Communion, Mental Prayer, the Divine Office, Devotion to Our Lady.
